Stéphanie Morgan re-elected to PSL City Council

Stephanie Morgan, re-elected to Port St. Lucie City Council on Tuesday, said she will continue to prioritize responsible development, water quality and lower property taxes.

The incumbent, 62, was elected to her second term as a representative for District 1, garnering 62% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the office of the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections.

Morgan, a real estate agent and small business owner, will serve a four-year term that pays $54,471 a year to oversee the city’s more than 217,500 residents and a budget of $731 million.

Stephanie Morgan was first elected to the Port St. Lucie City Council District 1 seat in 2016.

“I feel humbled,” Morgan told TCPalm minutes after his victory. “I think residents know that I do my homework, I do my research, I have common sense, I have experience.

She added: “It was not a single issue election. This was due to a collaboration of everything we have done in the past and will continue to do in the future for the betterment of the residents of Port St. Lucie.

Challenger Indony Jean Baptiste, 54, a minister who has said if elected he could resign mid-term to run for St. Lucia County sheriff in 2024, won about 19% of the vote. voice. Challenger Kevin Zimmerman, 59, a local transportation company owner, also got about 19% of the vote, according to election supervisor records.

Port Saint Lucie City Council

District 1 spans the northeast portion of the city, bordered by Midway Road, Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie Boulevard, and Florida’s Turnpike.

Key issues include the future development of Turin Regional Park and traffic maintenance for Crosstown Parkway, a $91 million, 8-mile road that opened in September 2019.

Morgan serves on the St. Lucie County Fire District Council, St. Lucie Transportation Planning Organization, St. Lucie County Tourism Development Board, St. Lucie Cultural Alliance and at the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce.

Morgan said one of his main goals will be converting septic tanks to sewers to promote water quality in Florida’s seventh most populous city. More than 8,800 residents have converted from a septic tank to a sewer since 1999. On average, the city has completed 350 conversions per year.

Morgan said it will also hold Waste Pro and other contracted waste haulers accountable. The city is in the midst of a lawsuit with Waste Pro, following endless complaints from customers about late and missed pickups for years. Waste Pro has been the city’s trash collector since 2006.

FCC Environmental Services of Florida will replace Waste Pro in less than a month. Key changes include moving from bi-weekly to weekly collection and paying nearly $100 more per year.

Morgan has received more than $44,000 in campaign contributions through Aug. 18, nearly double the monetary donations raised by Baptiste (over $16,300) and Zimmerman (over $6,300) combined, records show. .

Its donors included developer GHO Homes, the St. Lucie Fire Department Political Action Committee, Mayor Shannon Martin and City Council member Dave Pickett.

Although her seat on the board is nonpartisan, Morgan is a registered Republican.
