Housing issue baffled most New York mayoral candidates

Brooklyn is home to 19 of New York’s most expensive neighborhoods and locals know it. However, it appears that most mayoral candidates do not.

the New York Times asked the city’s top mayoral candidates how much a house in Brooklyn costs. Five of the candidates live in Brooklyn, but the question LED to a wide range of responses and the belief that many candidates in the city do not know the financial hardships faced by average New Yorkers.

According to Realtor.com, the average price of a house in Brooklyn is $ 929,000.

Shaun Donovan, who led the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under former President Barack Obama and previously New York Housing Commissioner under Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the Time, “I guess it’s about $ 100,000.”

Former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire came lower: “It must be between $ 80,000 and $ 90,000, if not more.”

Representatives for the two men later said they misspoke.

Donovan spokesman Jeremy Edwards told the newspaper Donovan mixed up his numbers as Donovan worked on a complex housing appraisal lawsuit. McGuire emailed the newspaper on Tuesday saying he made a mistake when accounting for the cost of a house in the popular borough.

Other candidates were closer, but still absent. Dianne Morales, who was born, raised and still lives in Brooklyn, guessed $ 500,000. Former New York Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, who grew up in Park Slope, one of Brooklyn’s wealthiest neighborhoods, guessed $ 800,000.

Former Bill de Blasio assistant Maya Wiley said the figure was $ 1.8 million, beating the average price, but given the price in town, no one was shocked by his response. City comptroller Scott Stringer guessed $ 1 million and entrepreneur Andrew Yang came closest with his estimate of $ 900,000.

The question sharp how much does a house cost in the district and in the city. Hawaii ($ 636,451) is the most expensive state to buy a home, according to Business Insider. The price of a house in Brooklyn is at least $ 200,000 more.

Fast company reported in March that 4.2% of residents who left Manhattan during the pandemic, moved in Brooklyn, the second highest rate outside of Suffolk County, on Long Island.
